How to Get By on Cash Only

4 Things To Look For In Bank Checking Services

Whether you're looking to open up your first checking account or you are interested in switching banks, no two checking services are exactly alike. In order to find the checking account and bank that will best suit your needs and lifestyle, you'll want to do a little "shopping around." Specifically, there are a few features you should be able to find in your future checking account that will make your life easier while saving you some money in the process.

No Balance Requirements

Some banks will have a minimum balance requirement in place, which means you need to keep at least a certain amount of money in your checking account at all times. Otherwise, access to your funds could be denied. This is a fairly old practice, but it's still something to watch out for; ideally, you'll want to find a checking account that does not have any minimum balance requirements at all.

Zero ATM Fees or ATM Reimbursement

ATM fees can really add up if your bank doesn't cover these for you. Not only may you need to pay the third-party fee charged by the ATM itself, but additional fees from your bank for using an outside ATM as well. If you tend to make a lot of ATM withdrawals using your bank card, make sure you find a bank that will either waive or completely reimburse your ATM fees.

Overdraft Protection

If you plan on opening up a checking and savings account through the same bank, make sure that you look into overdraft protection options. Many banks will automatically deduct funds from your savings account if you overdraft your checking, thus saving you in large overdraft fees.

Online and Mobile Account Access

These days, being able to access your account from your computer and/or mobile device is a must. Doing so allows you to check your account balance, make transfers, pay bills, and (sometimes) even deposit checks without having to visit your local banking branch. Make sure that whatever bank and checking account you end up choosing offers easy-to-use online and mobile access with plenty of time-saving features.

Finding the right checking services to suit your needs and budget can be a bit of a process, but it will be more than worth the effort when you ultimately find a checking account that you love. Be sure to look for these features in addition to others as you shop around.
